Don’t miss the Van Gogh Museum while in Amsterdam

I had been wanting to visit the Van Gogh Museum for so long, so visiting Amsterdam for a weekend with friends was the perfect opportunity. I loved walking around at my own pace and just admiring all the paintings. My favorite was the “Almond Blossom”. I stopped at the gift shop to buy a notebook with a cool design, too. I definitely recommend anyone visiting the city to go to the Van Gogh Museum, it’s definitely a must-visit!

Best value tickets with priority access to the museum!

Great afternoon with the whole family! My wife, the kids, and I all loved the exhibition. We booked these tickets and got priority access to the museum which saved us a lot of the time since the lines at the entry were huge! It was amazing to see the famous paintings in person, and I especially loved the collection of letters because you can learn more about Van Gogh’s life.

SEE VAN GOGH’S MASTERPIECES

Gain access to all permanent and temporary exhibitions at the Van Gogh Museum with a convenient audio guide so you can learn more about the artist’s life. See the famous “Sunflowers”, one of the multiple paintings the artist made, one of which he gave to the painter Gauguin, his friend. A really interesting fact about this painting is that it was made with just three shades of yellow! View Van Gogh’s “The Bedroom”. Although it might look a bit strange, the artist actually skewed the perspective on purpose, as he was inspired by Japanese printmaking. Another work that draws from the same inspiration is “Almond Blossom”, which depicts an almond tree ranch in bloom against a blue background, reminding us of spring and new beginnings. “The Yellow House (The Street)” shows a house in Arles, France, where the painter lived. Van Gogh wanted it to be a place where other artists could live and paint, too. “The Sower” is one of about 30 works that depict sowers, and “The Potato Eaters” shows people eating in a darkened room and represents the hard life in the countryside.

SEE WHAT THE ARTIST LOOKED LIKE AT VARIOUS POINTS OF HIS LIFE

In the “Self-Portrait with Grey Felt Hat”, the artist worked using the Pointillism technique, adding a blue background as a complete opposite to the orange in his beard and hair. The painting was made in Paris, as was the “Self-Portrait as a Painter”, which shows Van Gogh painting himself. The latter is the last portrait he made in Paris. He did not like the city, and you can notice it in his expression. You can see many more of Vincent Van Gogh’s paintings, and even those by artists such as Maurice de Vlaminck and Kees van Dongen, who were inspired by Van Gogh’s paintings. Visitors can read Van Gogh’s letters and see his drawings, too. He included many sketches in his letters, so they can give you a deeper look into Van Gogh’s creative process.

FOLLOW THE ARTISTIC TRAIL

To explore how Van Gogh influenced other artists and movements, consider visiting the Stedelijk Museum or the Moco Museum, both just a short walk away and focused on modern and contemporary art. You can also step into the world of another Dutch master at the Rembrandt House Museum, where the artist lived and worked. All of these, including the Van Gogh Museum, are part of the Amsterdam Museum Pass, a great way to experience more of the city's cultural highlights in one go.
